In the past few years, the Department of Adult and Community Education has intensified hands on skills training for its third year students to ensure students graduate with practical employable skills. This has been made possible through the course unit of Entrepreneurship Skills Development and Microfinance Management taught by Mr. Joseph Watuleke. The trainings have many times been conducted through collaboration with other Partners from outside the university to ensure the that the acquired skills are relevant to the current job market and industry demands.
On March 15, 2018 the Department of Adult and Community hosted a team of partners from Step30 International Ministries from Taiwan to Launch the Love Binti Uganda Student Project at the Department. The project aims to train students in Making reusable sanitary pads with the objective of contributing to reduction in school dropouts of the girl child in Ugandan schools. From the training, many third year students of Adult and Community Education offering Entrepreneurship took up the idea and developed a business plan to implement it for both charity and income generation. In bid to support this initiative, the Department of Adult and Community Education has acquired two motorized tailoring machines to boost the production of reusable sanitary pads and other related products. It is hoped that more of such machines will be acquired in the near future depending on availability of funds.
The tailoring machine project was jointly financed by Dean School of Distance and Life Long Learning. Dr. Alex Okot and Mr. Joseph Watuleke, the Entrepreneurship Lecturer and Coordinator for the Love Binti University Student Project at the Department of Adult and Community Education.
Mr. Joseph Watuleke calls upon the College Management to continue supporting the Entrepreneurial goal of the Department to produce students that are innovative and independent job creators with a right attitude to fight youth unemployment. Plans are underway to establish an entrepreneurial hub at the Department of Adult and Community Education to extend the entrepreneurial skills further to students in first year and second year before they reach third year to take it up as a course unit.
