Makerere University’s Principal of the College of Education and External Studies, Prof. Anthony Muwagga Mugagga, has urged the government to require every school in Uganda to have a playground, arguing that sports facilities are essential for identifying and nurturing children’s talents from an early age. Speaking at Namugongo Girls’ Boarding Primary School’s Sports Day, he said playgrounds also promote teamwork, peaceful competition, and holistic child development, while education stakeholders warned against the continued loss of school sports grounds to commercial development.

Makerere University is developing Uganda’s first PhD programme in Early Childhood Development (ECD) to strengthen research, teacher education and policy leadership. Unveiled during an ECD policy and competency-based curriculum workshop, the programme aims to address shortages of highly trained specialists and improve the quality of early childhood education. University leaders said it will promote innovative teaching and evidence-based policymaking, while education stakeholders emphasized stronger collaboration and better teacher preparation to improve learning outcomes.
