School of Education peace building project

School of Education with funding from British Council /DFID is working on a capacity building project for teachers in post conflict northern Uganda. The 23 year old armed conflict in Northern Uganda has left students and teachers traumatized. Schools lack formal training mechanisms in peace building needed to manage the traumatized students, teachers and parents. Through the pilot project, teachers in northern Uganda have been able to manage traumatized learners and fellow teachers leading to increased productivity.

Students, teachers and the community have been able to access free counseling. Peace education has been embedded in the Makerere University and Kyambogo University’s teacher training curriculum to equip teacher trainees with skills needed to support students in similar settings. Peace education training modules and materials have been developed for in service teachers to incorporate them into the curriuculum. The collaboration project is between Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Kigali National Institute of Education, Faurah Bay College of University of Sierra Leone and Stranmillis University College of Queen’s University, Belfast.
