Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL), College of Education and External Studies (CEES) through it Golden Key International Honour Society (GKIHS) shall in December 2011 engage in a joint community intervention with its partners in the East African region namely Kenyan Paraplegic Organization (KPO), Maendeleo Foundation International and others to raise awareness among communities about diseases whose victims suffer from social stigma.
This joint community initiative, the first of its kind CLL will venture into shall take place in Busia and Bungoma districts. It will focus on spinal injuries, other road traffic accidents and HIV/AIDS. The intervention aims to involve volunteers from different organizations across East Africa to let communities know that there is life after coming to terms with such stigmatized diseases and urging them to come out so that they can receive assistance of various forms from KPO. Other volunteer driven organizations in the region that have agreed to join the campaign include Na²olm Learning and Development Consult Ltd and the Uganda Rural Literacy and Community Development Association (URLCODA).
Participation of CLL in this partnership is crucial in the sense that it will help to achieve the goal of internationalization of Makerere University. It is also in line with the spirit of forging Unity in the East African Community. Students from SoDLL who will participate shall be expected to return to Uganda and spearhead a similar campaign in order to mobilize the Ugandan victims to come out for assistance from organizations like KPO. The intervention also potentially offers an opportunity for action research in the region.
