Launch of a Book Entitled:” Practices of Citizenship in East Africa” Perspectives from the Philosophical Pragmatism

On 14th Januaray,2020 a book launch was held at the Makerere University Guest House the function was officiated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof.Umar Kakumba who represented the vice chancellor in absentia.

Personalities present at the launch include; Dr.Muhammad Kiggundu who was the master of ceremony, Dr.Alice Nankya Ndidde the local Principle Investigator, Dr.Twine, Dr.Paul Muyinda Birevu, Prof.Jessica Aguti, Prof.Katariina Holma, and Tiina Kontinen, University of Jyvaskla, Finland.

Dr.Ndidde gave a brief background about the book and said it’s a result of 4 years of comprehensive research that combines development studies and education studies and collaborations from colleagues on a project called Grow. Makerere University also signed an agreement with the university of Jvasklya, and some activities took place among which include attending conferences at the university Oulu and the ultimate output is the book which was launched that day.

She said that another project was commissioned in perpetuation of the partnership with the University of Jyvaskyla Finland in September 2018 and will run till 2025 activities of the project include; taking on Dr.Twine as a postgraduate doctoral student at the University of Oulu on scholarship and post graduate scholarship for Dr.Kalembe at the University of Jvaskyla.

Under the auspices of the Grow project students got field attachment opportunities, a work shop was also held in order to build capacity of Phd Students in the education theories and philosophies this involved participation of principle investigators, students and supervisors that aimed at filling knowledge gaps. Dr.Ndidde extended her appreciation to Mr. Abert Tumwebaze head of Department of Adult and Community Education, to the Dean Dr. Alex Okot, to Dr. Jessica Aguti, to the author Dr. Twine who co-authored two chapters in the book, Mr.Kalembe who co-authored 3 chapters.

The Book was published by Routledge and the editors were Prof.Tiina Kontinen and Prof.Katariina Holma of the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Prof.Kontinen, applauded the team that worked on the research this involves members from University of Jvaskyla, University of Oulu, Makerere University, University of Dodoma and also NGOs like Action for Development. Prof.Holma appreciated the team for carrying out activities on time and also appreciate the diligence of the team.

Assoc. Prof. Paul Muyinda emphasized that writing a book is a rigorous process and appreciated the strides that were covered by achieving this feat, he also encouraged the spirit of collaborations that has since blossomed into over 15 projects covered at the college. On a special note he thanked the Government of Uganda for providing resources, also the Finnish University partners as well as the department of Adult and Community Learning.

Prof. Umar Kakumba congratulated the different departments that were involved in authoring the book and appreciated the comprehensive findings detailed in the book, he asserted that the book blends with the strategic mission of the University and the critical pillar of internalization, promoting of research and collaboration, strategic partnerships and opportunities for development.
