Mak CEES discusses partnership with King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language On 17th June 2025, the Principal of the College of Education and External Studies at Makerere University, Prof. Anthony Muwagga Mugagga hosted a meeting with Dr. Hanan Al Malki, the Director of Program and Centre Planning and Management at the King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language, aimed at building institutionalized partnerships in language education in Uganda and globally. Phase 1 of the e-Learning initiative at Makerere University registers remarkable achievements On Thursday 24th April 2025, the Director of the Institute of Open, Distance and E-learning under the College of Education and External Studies presented the dissemination results of phase 1 of the e-Learning initiative at Makerere University to over 75 participants and key stakeholders. MakCEES develops an Entrepreneurial Leadership Initiative for UPE Schools School Managers have been urged to incorporate entrepreneurship as an innovative solution aimed at addressing the existing problems in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools.
Studies indicate that in most UPE Schools in Uganda, learners still lack parental support, mid-day meals, scholastic materials, clean water, and are often unattended to by teachers, which undermines children’s desire to learn or stay in school because hunger impairs their ability to concentrate and learn effectively. CEES Holds Open Day and Skills Expo to Empower Future Educators Several students from the College of Education and External Studies (CEES) at Makerere University have showcased different innovations that can be used to train learners in the new competence-based curriculum that has been rolled out across different levels of learning.
These student innovations were presented during the CEES Open Day and Skills Expo held on Friday 14th March 2025 at Makerere University Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility Auditorium under the theme: “Empowering Future Educators Through Skills and Innovation for National Prosperity. Makerere University Hosts 3rd East African Teacher Education Symposium: A Regional Call to Decolonize and Re-imagine Education In a continued effort to champion regional dialogue on educational transformation, Makerere University, together with its partners under the Capacity Building for Research-Based Teacher Education (CABUTE) project hosted the 3rd East African Teacher Education Symposium (EATES) from 9th to 10th April 2025, under the theme “Curriculum Development and Decolonization of Education in East Africa.” A Collaborative Effort to Enhance Refugee Education Through Integrating Citizen Education, Promoting Digital Inclusion, and Encouraging Community Engagement for Sustainable Learning Opportunities Envisioning the future of refugee access to education, stakeholders and participants advocated for uniform perspectives on the Higher Education Access Certificate (HEAC) across institutions, citizen education to facilitate refugee access and meaningful participation, and development of policies that prioritize digital inclusion. Celebrating Prof. Livingstone Walusimbi’s Legacy: A Call for Linguistic Innovation and Digital Transformation Makerere University College of Education and External Studies in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom Ministry of Heritage and Palaces hosted an inaugural memorial lecture to honour the late Professor Livingstone Walusimbi, whose ground breaking contributions to African languages have left an indelible mark on the field. Themed “Building Sustainable Futures: Bridging Prof. Walusimbi’s Linguistic Legacy with Digital Transformation,“ the event provided a profound moment of reflection on the transformative power of language and its pivotal role in shaping societies. Makerere University academic staff trained in competence based Teaching The Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) and the College of Education and External Studies through the Centre of Teaching and Learning Support are implementing the Pedagogy and Professionalism course, which is aligned to Makerere University’s strategic approach of promoting innovative teaching and learning. Makerere University academic staff trained on new Competency Based Curriculum In a bid to improve the quality of education in the country, the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Education and Sports and the National Curriculum Development Centre embarked on the implementation of the new Competency Based curriculum at the Lower Secondary level (Senior One to Senior Four). Dr Joseph Kimoga: Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence in Priesthood On Saturday 11th January, 2025, a huge delegation from the College of Education and External Studies crossed the Equator to attend Dr Joseph Kimoga’s priestly silver jubilee celebrations at his parents’ home in Baja, Bukulula Parish, Masaka Diocese. Dr Kimoga is an Associate Professor at the East African School of Higher Education Studies and Development, College of Education and External Studies, Makerere University.
