Health Awareness Campaign

On Friday 28th March, the CEES Department of Adult and Community Education held a Health Awareness Campaign in collaboration with Makerere University Adult Community Education Students Association and Uganda Cares. The services offered at the campaign were HIV Counselling and testing, syphilis testing, reproductive health education and distribution of health education information communication materials.

4th National Intergenerational Literacy Learners’ Conference

CEES’ Centre for Lifelong Learning organized the 4th National Intergenerational Literacy Learners’ Conference in Uganda at St Joseph’s College, Omabaci in Arua District. The theme this year was “ICT Literacies for Community mobilization and sustainable local economic development in Uganda” The event was attended by 416 participants including community members and students. Activities included a health camp, computer training, group discussions on ICTs, personal experiences and traditional dances.

Mainstreaming Community University Engagement and Community Based Research

Dr George Openjuru, Assoc. Prof. and Dean School of Distance and Lifelong Learning represented Makerere University College of Education and External Studies at the CUVIC 2014 University of Victoria Conference from 19th to 22nd May 2014. The conference titled ‘Beyond Engagement: Creating Integration, Innovation & Impact’, witnessed engaging keynote presentations, workshops, poster sessions and field trips.

FENU Lifelong Learning Thematic Group Meeting

 

On Wednesday 9th April 2014, the School of Distance and Lifelong Learning hosted Forum for Education NGOs in Uganda (FENU) lifelong learning thematic group meeting.

The seminar was attended by over twenty participants from different NGOs and Civil Service Organizations and staff from the School of Distance and Lifelong Learning.

Positively engaging parents and the community in children’s learning

Enrolment for both boys and girls has significantly improved in Uganda since the introduction of UPE in 1997. However high drop out rates, poor learning outcomes and performance levels still exist in the education system more so in rural areas. Nevertheless, the education system has not focused enough attention on the contribution of community based initiatives in improving learning outcomes and there is limited school/community level research in Uganda.

Publishing for new readers

In a bid to support a reading culture and overcome the lack of appropriate reading materials for rural people, 17 titles of short stories for new readers were published in four local languages (Lugwara, Luganda, Luo and English). This was part of the Learning for Empowerment Through Training in Ethnographic Research project funded by the DFID-British Council DELPHE.

Department of Open and Distance Learning hosts visiting Associate Professors

The Department of Open and Distance Learning has been host to visiting academics Dr. Kathy Lynch from the University of Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia and Dr Dick Ng’ambi from the University of Cape Town during October. Dr. Kathy Lynch Whilst at Makerere University, Dr Lynch delivered a public lecture on “Higher education learning and teaching in the 21st century: Embracing blended learning”.
