Makerere university council is today set to install Prof Barnabus Nawangwe as the university vice chancellor.

Prof Nawangwe officially takes over from his predecessor Prof John Dumba Ssentamu.

The University Council chairperson Eng Charles Wana-etyem tells KFM that Prof Nawangwe will be installed at 2 pm in the university main hall.

In July this year, the University Council recommended Prof Nawangwe as the next Vice Chancellor after emerging winner with 15 out of 21 votes.

He beat off competition from Prof Venansius Baryamureeba who got four votes and Prof Edward Kirumira, the Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, who managed to get only two votes.

Meanwhile, Prof Nawangwe has spoken out about the uphill task that awaits him during his five-year term in office.

Speaking to KFM ahead of his installation today, Prof. Nawangwe says he takes on the institution’s top most office with many challenges that affect both students and lecturers.

He cites the late delivery of marks, delayed issuance of transcripts, poor sanitation in halls of residence, limited registration facilities and allegations of sex for marks and sexual harassment of students by some members of staff.

Nawangwe adds that the staff on the other hand is demanding for salary enhancement and improved welfare, promising to put his best foot forward in addressing these numerous challenges.

One of his first tasks is to introduce channels through which students can report cases of sexually harassment directly to his office and has vowed to expeditiously handle the culprits
