A committee sanctioned to find a replacement for the coveted position of Makerere University Vice Chancellor is ready to receive applications from suitable candidates as Professor John Ddumba Ssentamu’s term is due to expire on the 31 August this year.

The Chairperson of the search committee, Irene Onvonji Odida, says they are required to find qualified candidates within three months. The candidates are required to between the age of 40 to 65 years of age. Ovonji told the media why the age limit was lifted to 65.

According to Ovonji, the age limit was lifted because the committee wants the process to be as competitive as possible by widening the pool of potential candidates.

Other requirements for a candidate for the Vice Chancellor position include; a PhD from a recognised academic institution, a proven track record of management including supervision of graduate students and research. The others are five years of teaching experience at the rank of associate professor in a reputable institution and ten years working experience at a senior management position among others.

Last year, the President instructed a visitation committee to investigate the problems at Makerere as the university tottered from one crisis to another. The visitation committee led by Dr Abel Rwendeire who is the deputy chairperson at NPA is yet to present its report.
