It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Makerere University College of Education and External Studies.
The College was formed following the merger of School of Education and Institute of Adult and Continuing Education; and now has three Schools and two Centres. These are: School of Distance and Lifelong Learning, School of Education, East African School of Higher Education Studies and Development, Centre for Teaching and Learning Support and Centre for Lifelong Learning.
Under the guidance of our expert staff, students have opportunities to purse or advance their careers in science and technical education, foundations and curriculum studies, open and distance learning, adult and community education and higher education. In addition using open and distance learning methodologies and in collaboration with other Schools, students can pursue a number of external programs.
We are widely recognised for the learner-centered and applied nature of our courses which equip graduates with essential employability skills. Our students and graduates are identified among the best in the region with many becoming excellent professionals in their areas of specialty
We are committed to breaking down barriers that restrict entry to education and we are continuing to increase access to quality adult, community, E-learning and distance education pathways to learning. Our Centre for Lifelong Learning and Centre for Teaching and Learning Support are revolutionizing professional educational approaches and enhancing the effectiveness of knowledge transfer partnerships whilst providing vital community adult education and outreach which are enhancing students’ learning experiences.
The College believes that higher education is a global public good and efforts to develop and support it need both local and international input. It is also based on the assumption that through establishing these kinds of working relationships, higher education institutions in this region will be able to cope with global changes and challenges and move alongside other institutions in the world. The College has fostered successful partnerships with industry, government, communities and institutions to enhance the quality of our teaching and research. We will continue to develop existing partnerships and to establish new ones.
Our College is totally committed to providing improved management of both secondary and higher education institutions, quality research outputs, effective dissemination of research outputs and findings, provision of relevant undergrduate and postgraduate degree programmes, human resource capacity building programmes and the provision of quality teaching in our university and tertiary institutions.
Our mission is “To build professionalism in teaching and management of education at all levels and to increase access to quality adult, community and distance education opportunities, research and services responsive to national and global needs.” College of Education and External Studies is a vibrant college bursting with opportunity and I invite you to join us as we build for the future.
